There is nothing quite so depressing as finding yourself abroad on a big fun American holiday and no one around has even heard of it. The three worst American holidays to spend overseas are 4th of July, Halloween, and Thanksgiving. (Christmas in various materialistic forms has long been exported around the globe by corporations.)
Thus, on the 4th of July in Ulanbaatar, I was determined to find another American to celebrate with. And, nearing midnight, I finally at least convinced some Australians to celebrate with me. (Luckily Aussies never need much convincing when it comes to this sort of thing!)
“Team America, F- Yeah!!”
